Victims of domestic violence often carry scars of that time on their heart as well as their bodies. The visible scar they see with each look in the mirror can haunt their search for a new life and bring memories of that horrible time to the surface once again. The ability to find a job, to interact with new friends, to feel attractive once again - all things needed to bury the pain - are compromised by the smile that was taken from them.

In cooperation with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Dr. Knudson provides new smiles to qualified applicants who have been dentally disfigured as a result of domestic violence. Robert L Knudson DDS spent his early years in Los Altos, California and Lake Tahoe, Nevada where his father, also a dentist, practiced until 1989. Growing up, Dr. Bob was influenced by his father's sense of professionalism and the honest concern he saw his dad show for his patients. He and his wife, Rose, have two daughters, Kelsey and Madeline, and he enjoys tending his grapes and making fine wine.

Graduating from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1983, Dr. Bob received postgraduate training in orthodontics from the United States Dental Institute and continues to keep up to date on state-of-the-art dental techniques by regularly attending hands-on clinical training courses with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Las Vegas Institute, and serves as newsletter editor for the Mount Baker District of the Washington State Dental Association (WSDA). He has been published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, The WSDA News, Journal of the American Student Dental Association, and interviewed on radio and TV. He is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, a founding member of the Puget Sound Study Club for Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry, and a twenty-year member of the Mastermind Dental Study Group of Vancouver, British Columbia. He also serves on the board of directors and as director of post-graduate education for the Canadian Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

He helped establish the Give Back A Smile program in Washington to assist victims of domestic violence, providing them with the reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry needed to restore their smile. Qualified participants receive care at no cost.
